Abbaye du Bec-Hellouin — A Morning of Gregorian Silence in Normandy

12 May 2026 6 min

The Abbaye du Bec-Hellouin, home of a living Benedictine community, offers one of the most unexpectedly moving private visits in Normandy. FFGR arranges access.

The Abbaye Notre-Dame du Bec, founded in 1034, produced two Archbishops of Canterbury — Lanfranc and Anselm — and remains, a thousand years later, a living Benedictine monastery. The monks celebrate the seven canonical hours daily; visitors who arrive at Lauds or Vespers are admitted to the church for the chant. There is no experience in Normandy quite like hearing Gregorian chant in a Romanesque nave at five in the morning, the only light from candles and the first grey entering from the east windows.

Private access and the monastic guesthouse

FFGR Normandy's concierge can arrange a private visit to the Bec-Hellouin monastery including a guided tour of the cloister and the abbatial church led by one of the brothers, access to the chapter house, and — for those who wish to linger — a half-day retreat in the monastic guesthouse. The monastery operates a guest programme for those seeking silence; FFGR Normandy facilitates the booking and provides the return transfer.

Combining with Giverny or Rouen

The abbey sits between Rouen and Évreux, forty-five minutes from each. A morning at Bec-Hellouin combines naturally with an afternoon in Rouen — the cathedral, the Gros-Horloge, lunch at a Michelin table — giving a full day that moves from the monastic to the medieval without contradiction.

  • Distance from Deauville: 65 km — 55 min
  • Distance from Rouen: 45 km — 40 min
  • Canonical hours: Lauds (5:45), Terce, Sext, None, Vespers (18:00), Compline
  • Private guided visit: arranged by FFGR concierge — 2 hours
  • Combine with: Rouen (afternoon), Giverny (afternoon), Évreux Cathedral
« Silence in a place that has practised it for a thousand years is a different quality of silence. »
